The first few hours
The first few hours at O & P are special for a baby. The baby is kept in a special observation area. After ensuring that all is well, the baby is shifted to the mother. Special nurses are appointed to take care of the baby throughout the stay. Lactation consultants advise about breast feeding and provide complete support to the mother.

 Newborn screening |
| Some illnesses show no apparent signs at birth but could pose a major health risk if they go undetected. At O & P, we have a special newborn screening program that helps to detect these underlying risks.
CH, CAH: In India, the commonest diseases are Congenital Hypothyroidism (CH) and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). In Congenital Hypothyroidism, there is a low level of the thyroid hormone. This may cause mental retardation or short stature. In CAH, the risk is higher and if undetected, may cause shock or death in infants because the kidneys lose too much salt. Both can be treated if detected early.
Screening for metabolic disorders: The O & P Newborn Screening Program offers the entire range of tests for screening metabolic disorders like 17-OHP, galactosemia, G-6 PD Deficiency, Biotinidase deficiency, cystic fibrosis, and hemoglobinopathies.
Hearing screening: This test is a must for all newborns and is done at O & P.
Sonography: Sonography of the newborn’s brain and abdomen is done at O & P to ensure normalcy.

KANGAROO CARE
The O & P NICU promotes KANGAROO CARE. This is
a way
of holding a preterm or full term infant so that there is skin-to-skin contact between the infant and the mother. The close physical contact can help to stabilize the preterm infant's heartbeat, temperature, and breathing. It ensures longer periods of sleep for the infant, helps
it gain more
weight, decreases its crying,
and ensures longer
periods of alertness and an earlier hospital discharge. Mothers are known to have more success with breastfeeding and improve their milk supply.

| Well babies need to see their doctor several times a year starting at
4 weeks
, then every month for the first 6 months, then every quarter till 2 years, then every 4 months till 5 years of age, then every 6months till 12 years of age. O & P’s Well Baby Clinic is a preventive program for your baby that advises and supports you on the following.
Assessing regular growth and development of your child

| Sick child care |
O & P has regular OPDs for sick children. It is advisable to get the child to O & P for cough, cold, diarrhea, vomiting and high fever. O & P also has round the clock emergency services should the need arise.

| Pediatric intensive care |
O & P’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is one of the best around. It has the latest in medical technology and highly skilled specialists to closely care for your child when he /she is very sick. We have children here who get treated for severe pneumonia, meningitis, gastroenteritis, dehydration, convulsions and others. Besides having a pediatric intensivist, the unit has many other subspecialists, such as cardiologists, neurosurgeons etc. Respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, and pharmacists are also present. O & P’s PICU has a higher nurse-to-patient ratio, which means there are more nurses to care for the children here. Child life specialists trained in fields like development, education, psychology, and counseling, help in calming the child’s fears or providing distractions like books and games. O & P has 24 hours sick child care and emergency services.
