Hearing Screening Tests

Deafness is the most common disability in India. Approximately 1 out of every 500 – 800 babies is born with a hearing loss in both ears. Without newborn screening it is very difficult to detect hearing loss in the first days of the baby’s life. Usually hearing defects are detected after 2yrs. of age. If hearing loss is ignored, your baby may have speech, language and learning problems. Children whose hearing loss is identified before 6 months of age can achieve normal communication skills within 1-5yrs.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) - This is the hearing screening test which is most commonly used. This test measures sound waves produced in the inner ear. A tiny probe is placed just inside the bay’s ear canal. It measures the response when clicks or tones are played into the baby’s ear.

The test does not take more than 5 minutes, is painless and may be done when your baby is sleeping or lying still.
