Imaging Tests
Head Ultrasound:
The anterior fonatelle is a window to the brain. The anterior fontanelle is wide open in newborns and therefore the head ultrasound ensures easy visualization without any radiation. Any major malformations of the brain can be easily picked up in the ultrasound. Failure to carry out ultrasound screening may result in malformations such as Arnold Chiari syndrome, Dandy Walker syndrome etc.
Renal Ultrasound:
Kidneys are at the posterior part of the abdomen (in the back). Hence a routine medical checkup will never pick up a renal disorder.USG is the simplest way of detecting a PUJ obstruction or congenital renal disorders.
Colour Doppler of the heart:
Babies can have heart defects such as Atrial septal defect, Ventricular Septal Defect, coarctation of the aorta etc. There are also other complex cardiac diseases which cannot be detected clinically. The colour Doppler of the heart is the easiest non invasive way to pick up such heart defects.
