Preventing tooth decay
Dental Sealants
Sealants protect children's permanent teeth from decay. Sealants are painted on new molars to stop food from collecting on the chewing surfaces of teeth. Not all children need sealants, but
ask about them when you see your pediatric dentist.
Fluorides:
Fluoride in the water supply has been responsible for a marked improvement in the oral health of children. Fluoride added to the drinking water, and fluoride in toothpaste, has reduced the amount of tooth decay. Fluoride supplements may be needed for children at high risk of dental decay who live in an area where the community water supply is not optimally fluoridated. Parents need to discuss fluoride supplements with dentist.
Should you worry about thumb and finger sucking?
Thumb sucking is perfectly normal for infants; most stop by age 2. If your child does not, discourage it after age 4. Prolonged thumb sucking can create crowded, crooked teeth, or bite problems. Your pediatric dentist will be glad to suggest ways to address a prolonged thumb sucking habit.
