2.Endoscopic surgery – This is done using a video endoscope. It is a minimally invasive surgery which involves a very small   incision through which the polyp is removed using the endoscope. This surgery also clears out the sinuses.

What is the treatment for nasal polyps?

Nasal polyps are usually treated with nasal steroids in the form of a spray. Oral steroids are sometimes used for a short duration. Medication for allergic rhinitis and antibiotics to treat the infection. If the condition does not respond to medication then surgery is advised.

PEDIATRIC SURGERY

My 3 yr. old daughter has been suffering from severe urinary infections over the last few months.

You must get your daughter investigated as she may be having a problem of urine going back into the bladder, a condition called reflux disease. When this condition is less severe it can be corrected by giving antibiotics. However if it very severe it can be corrected surgically. Recurrent urinary infections can otherwise damage the kidneys.

My 8yr. old son gets frequent infections and ballooning of the foreskin. What should I do?

Your child must be suffering from Phimosis wherein frequent infections cause an occlusion of the urinary meatus. This condition can be corrected surgically by a simple surgery called circumcision.

My daughter is 5months old and keeps crying uncontrollably. It appears that she has stomach pain and bilious vomiting.

She must be suffering from intussusceptions, which means that the small bowel gets obstructed. This most often needs surgical correction.

My 6 month old baby does not have a visible testis. What should I do ?

This condition is called undescended testis and requires corrective surgery immediately. If not operated, the testicle will be damaged because of its abnormal position.

My 4 year old son has a lump in his groin which is seen prominently when he coughs or cries.

Your son is suffering from Hernia which can be corrected by a simple and quick laproscopic surgery.

My one month baby has jaundice and also passes whitish stools.

This condition called Biliary Atresia needs immediate surgical attention within the first 60days in order to prevent irreversible damage to the liver. If not treated it will lead to liver cirrhosis and permanent damage to the liver.

My 2 month old baby is vomiting after every feed and is always hungry.

Your baby may have a condition called Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis which means that the muscle around the outlet of the stomach thickens and does not allow the feeds to go down. Sometimes you may see a small bulge in the upper abdomen. This condition can be very well treated by laproscopic surgery.

1.My child has persistent cough for a long time. Do I need to worry?

Besides a routine chest X-ray you need to check with your doctor if there is any foreign body obstructing your child’s airways.

My 2 year old son strains to pass urine and his urine stream is very weak.

Your son may have an obstruction in the urinary passage which is called posterior urethral valves. This condition can be corrected by endoscopic surgery. If not corrected quickly it may damage both the kidneys.

My 8 month old son passes urine from an abnormal opening and his penis appears bent.

He appears to have a condition called Hypospadias. This condition can be corrected surgically. However it is a major surgery which may be done in various stages and the child may need to be in the hospital for upto 10days.
