Pregnancy and care
Normal pregnancy
At Oyster and Pearl, we endeavor to make the 9 months during a woman’s pregnancy, as also her post delivery period, her most cherished ones. Pregnancy and child birth is a phase in a woman’s life in which great care needs to be taken. For most women, pregnancy follows a routine course. Our services help to make your pregnancy a safe one and your baby a healthy baby, while meeting all your needs of comfort, convenience and hygiene. As promoters of the natural delivery process, we strongly emphasize on antenatal care classes for the couple and the following:
  • Regular checkups by qualified gynecologists
  • Regular ultrasound in the first trimester
  • Routine blood investigations
  • Anomaly scan and triple test to rule out abnormality at 16 weeks
  • Regular USG scan in the third trimester
  • NST – Non Stress Test at 35 weeks onwards to ensure fetal well-being
  • Participation and interaction with O & P obstetricians, pediatricians, diet and     exercise counselors, lactation consultants and nursing staff on a regular basis in     EXPECTATIONS, our antenatal program.

    High risk pregnancy

A stressful lifestyle and pressing demands on women across the world are placing a high risk on women in pregnancy. Although, pregnancy usually follows a stable course for most women across the nine months, there are about 6 -8 % women for whom the period is dotted with medical difficulties and complications, termed as high risk pregnancy.

These complications more often than not are serious and require expert medical care and supervision to ensure safety for the mother and her baby. O & P is equipped to deliver expert care and treatment in such conditions. While some problems are unavoidable, our doctors have a special training in high-risk pregnancy care – from treating diabetes in pregnancy, hypertension in the mother, preterm labor, recurrent miscarriages, fetal abnormalities and multiple births and work to minimize the associated risks. At O & P we use advances in technology and medical science to improve diagnosis and treatment. For every pregnancy at O & P, we go beyond routine tests and have screenings for early detection of genetic disorders and birth defects.

    Labor

O & P has an antenatal care program that brings the mother up to date in all stages of pregnancy, from the pre-conception diet to post delivery health care and baby care. Labor is a specialized area where expecting mothers learn what to expect and how to deal with labor. Every mother at O & P gets an overview of the stages and process of labor, breathing and relaxation techniques, support, medication options, variations in labor including Caesarean birth, so that when the time arrives, she can deal with the situation well.

At O & P, we ensure a woman gets the utmost care during labor in the following ways:
  • Qualified, trained & experienced nurses monitor the patient in labor
  • 24 hours attendance by doctors who are experienced in obstetric care
  • A state-of-the-art pre-labor waiting area with NST machine and monitors,     measures maternal parameters like BP and oxygen saturation
  • An international class labor room and operation theater that stands next to the     labor room
  • An anesthetist is available 24 X 7 should patients need epidural analgesia on an     emergency Caesarean section.
  • A comfortable waiting area next to the labor waiting room puts the
        husband/attendant at ease
  • State-of-the- art neonatal care unit ensures immediate care for the newborn     infant
  • The neonatalogist is present for all deliveries

    Painless delivery

Labor pain until recent years was accepted as part and parcel of the delivery process. In recent years, however, the pain can be removed from labor if the mother so wishes. Today, painless delivery is being chosen widely by women and doctors alike. O & P with its state-of-the-art technology and experienced doctors supports this procedure through epidural analgesia, interim pain relief medications and specific breathing techniques. In epidural analgesia, local anesthetics are injected into your lower back and into the space surrounding your spinal cord. There is nothing to fear about this anesthesia. It is a widely accepted procedure around the world. Moreover, you get to experience the joy of having a baby without being exhausted by labor pains.

    Caesarean Delivery

At O & P, a Caesarean section is advised when natural delivery poses a risk to the mother or baby. These could be due to a number of reasons like prolonged labor, fetal or maternal distress, uterine rupture, cord prolapse, failed induction of labor and many more. We prefer a spinal anesthesia against a general anesthesia as this avoids sedation of the newborn and keeps the mother fresh and alert to receive her baby. Pain relief after the Caesarean makes the pain bearable. With advanced technology, you can still have a ‘natural’ second delivery if the situation so allows. It is no more a case of ‘Once a Caesarean, always a Caesarean’.

    Post delivery care

At O & P, we take care that the post delivery stay is very comfortable and make sure that every need is looked into. We have comfortable rooms with privacy for breast feeding, lactation consultants to help the new mother, a diet plan suitable to a woman who has just delivered and counseling on diet, exercise, muscle toning, contraception and parenting.

    Cord blood banking

O & P Hospital offers cord blood banking, a modern medical miracle. Umbilical cord blood is loaded with ‘stem cells’, which are the origins of the body’s immune and blood systems. These stem cells if preserved (banked) in a state-of-the-art preservation facility can be used years later for treatment, whenever your baby or any of your children, is faced with a life threatening disease or serious ailments. This is very effective in the treatment of almost 75 serious ailments like leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, anemia, inherited disorders and more. Cord blood stem cell banking also secures your baby against lifestyle diseases like diabetes, heart problems, etc. and is not as expensive as it is made out to be.
